Located along San Francisco's busy mid-Market corridor, Market Square is a two building development that seamlessly merges state-of-the-art office space with an integrated ground floor community featuring the best of the city's food and retail purveyors. The transformation of the former Western Furniture Exchange and Merchandise Mart opens the building to the public for the first time since its construction in 1937, drawing the city fabric in to an open, light-filled retail concourse and through to a landscaped courtyard.
Natural materials, including reclaimed wood from one of the building’s earlier additions, are used throughout. Iconic concrete columns are restored and exposed to form space defining elements of the interior, while additional windows and entryways flood light on them and the double-height market hall they support. What was once a dark, outdated space has been re-invented into a cohesive part of the neighborhood of Mid-Market.
BCV collaborated with BNBuilders and Page & Turnbull on the overall redevelopment of Market Square, with RMW as General Contractor.
